A couple reasons this landed so badly. First, taking away something like a one-month sabbatical feels like a slap in the face, especially for people approaching that five-year mark. They absolutely should’ve grandfathered folks in.

Second, the bigger issue is the complete lack of emotional intelligence from senior leadership. Saying “it is what it is” is incredibly dismissive and tone-deaf. It sends a loud message: we don’t care.

And of course they don’t want to be transparent, because either (a) things really are bad financially and they’re scrambling, or (b) things aren’t that bad, but they’re making this cut anyway for other reasons. And even if they were honest, I’m not sure people would believe them at this point.

Excellent perspective, Claire. Leaders often underestimate how much trust is eroded not by the decision itself, but by how it’s communicated and executed.
